Lexington – Pumpkin Barrel Ale – barrel aged imperial pumpkin ale
What could possibly make a good pumpkin beer even greater? Resting it in bourbon barrels. This beer pours a very hazy, amber-orange color with a medium sized, dense and foamy, light tan head. The nose has a fairly bold pumpkin gourd aroma along with light nutmeg, slightly boozy bourbon, grainy malts, and light yeast esters. It has a medium body with light carbonation and a slightly smooth mouth feel. Pumpkin gourd and light nutmeg notes come through first on the palate, followed by grainy malts on the mid-palate. The nutmeg flavors resurface on the tail end along with lightly boozy bourbon, before finishing slightly bitter. Review by Dan Chacon
Peculier – Rakuyou – Japanese style rice lager
This lager pours a brilliantly clear gold color with a large effervescent head that fades quickly. The aroma is light and somewhat sweet with hints of orange. The taste is immediate and clear with an upfront sweetness and a clean rice character, paired with very active carbonation that moves into a tart finish and notes of orange zest. Overall, it is a refreshing light-bodied lager with surprising complexity that is crushable yet full flavored. Review by Stefan Walberg
River North – Bucket of Bolts – English style barleywine
Immediately upon opening, the aroma is intense with sweet caramel and coffee notes, and further in, light cinnamon and spice. It pours a very dark amber color with nearly no head. The first impression is a smooth, full-bodied mouthfeel rich with flavor. A bready caramel sweetness and bitter coffee move into a lighter finish with cinnamon and impressions of piney hops. A delicious full-bodied beer perfect for the changing seasons. Review by Stefan Walberg
Boulevard – Rum Barrel Pecan Pie – flavored barrel aged imperial brown ale
Boulevard delivers another standout from their barrel aged line. It pours an almost opaque burnt mahogany color with a small, foamy tan head with an orange hue. The nose is sweet with maple syrup and pecans up front, followed by whipped cream and sweetbread, then a touch of rum on the tail end. The body sits at medium-heavy with medium-light carbonation for a moderately creamy mouth feel. The palate mirrors the nose with the addition of slightly bitter malts mid-palate and a light booziness on the finish that breaks up the sweetness. Review by Dan Chacon
New Belgium – Voodoo Blaze Lightning – New England style hazy IPA
The latest in the Voodoo Ranger line pours a fairly cloudy straw color with a light head whose tight bubbles linger on the glass. The aroma is somewhat sweet with pineapple and citrus plus an underlying resinous hop character. The mouth feel is surprisingly light with a touch of smooth creaminess. Flavors open with pineapple and lemon and give way to a dank, resinous hop profile. A very drinkable, fruit-forward IPA that clocks in at 7.3% ABV. Review by Stefan Walberg
