Loveland Aleworks – Remailer – pastry stout
Loveland Aleworks have gained a reputation for brewing flavorful sour ales. But they also brew some great stouts, and this beer is a perfect example of that! It pours a very dark brown color with a small, foamy, ruby hued brown head. On the nose you get peanut flour and peanut butter up front, followed by marshmallow, milk chocolate, and hints of dark malts. The body sits at a medium-heavy weight with a medium-light carbonation level and a smooth mouth feel. Light peanut flour and milk chocolate flavors hit your tongue up front, followed by lightly bitter, dark malts on the mid-palate with a slightly dry character. Peanut flour and milk chocolate resurface on the finish, although bolder here, and linger just a bit on the finish.
Verhaeghe – Duchesse Red – fruited Flanders red sour
The Verhaeghe brewery has history dating back to 1885 and has brewed its beer in the West Flanders traditional methods since its beginnings. This beer pours a brownish-ruby color with a small, foamy, ruby hued head. Very bold aromas of black cherry and candied cherries fill your nose, along with a tart character and some light grainy malts. It has a medium-light body with a light carbonation level and a mild tart finish. The palate mirrors the nose with this beer, although it is just slightly tarter than the nose leads on. This beer is the perfect blend of a Flanders red with tart Belgian cherries.
Finkel & Garf – Spring IPA – American IPA
We haven’t seen a seasonal beer from Finkel & Garf for a little while now, so this beer was refreshing to see, and is pretty refreshing to drink. It pours a translucent straw yellow color with a small, foamy white head. Ripe mango aromas hit your nose up front, followed by some lemon rind and rounded out with earthy hops. This IPA is easy drinking with its medium-light body, light carbonation level, and slightly dry finish. Light mango and lemon rind hit your palate up front, followed by earthy hops on the mid-palate, which take on a more floral character towards the tail end with a mild bitter and dry finish, leaving you ready for the next sip. This beer definitely brings a springtime feel, which matches well with the warmer weather we’ve been having.
