Crooked Stave – Earl Grey – Bergamot tea infused Brett saison

If you're into beer that will challenge your perception of what a beer should and can be, you should definitely give this a try. It pours an extremely cloudy, almost opaque, yellow-orange color with a small fizzy white head that dissipates immediately. On the nose you get aromas of tangelo and tart lemon up front, followed by earthy and funky Brettanomyces characteristics, herbaceous tea, all backed by some grainy and wheat malts. The body sits at a medium weight with a bright medium-heavy carbonation which really brings the beer to life! Tangelo and herbaceous tea flavors hit your tongue first before being overtaken by a wave of bold, tart lemon, followed by grainy wheat malts on the mid-palate. The tart lemon carries through into the finish where the earthy and funky Brett also surfaces fairly strongly. The Brett lingers for just a bit before the beer drops off moderately dry. Ratio Beerworks – Hold Steady w/ Coffee – flavored Scotch ale

Ah, the ol' Chocolate Rye Scotch Ale with Coffee. I honestly love it when beers have a bunch of descriptors in the name, and you can taste every single one. This version of Hold Steady from Ratio uses coffee from the local favorite Novo Coffee. Sometimes, when coffee is added to a beer, it can be overpowering, but not here. This beer is the perfect mix of flavors. It has a nice blend of coffee, chocolate, and spicy breadiness on the nose, and a moderate amount of carbonation in the body. The taste is complex. Dark chocolate blends with rye spices and black coffee for some bitterness, but it is immediately balanced with some caramel and sweet malt notes. The finish lingers like you just had an espresso with some bitter chocolate on the side. Coffee lovers would enjoy this, but it's also approachable for adventurous beer drinkers who want to try something new that doesn't really fit into any one category. Review by Daniel Trouwborst

Toppling Goliath – Hazy Day Sue – New England style hazy IPA

This new release in the pseudo sue line from Toppling Goliath (out of Decora, Iowa) pours a cloudy gold color with a rich creamy head that immediately gives tropical aromas, pineapple and mango as well as some more reserved bitter hop notes. The flavor matches almost perfectly with the opening being a bright tropical medley with orange and mango. This is followed by a light crisp hop finish and an overall mild sweetness. This is a great example of a hazy IPA and again reminiscent of warmer times. Review by Stefan Walberg

Prairie Artisan Ales – Midnight Temptation – flavored stout

Reading that this beer was brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla, AND chocolate syrup, I went into it expecting a sugar bomb. And don't get me wrong, it is a little sweet, but nothing to the level which I was expecting. It pours a dark milk chocolate brown color with a small foamy brown head that leaves a particle film on the glass (I'm assuming from the chocolate syrup). On the nose you get more of a baker's cocoa along with aromas of coffee, light vanilla, and dark grainy malts. The body and carbonation both sit at a medium level, and it finishes mildly dry, which is surprising for the style. You get the same baker's cocoa note on the palate up front, followed by some vanilla and dark grainy malts. Sweeter milk chocolate flavors come through towards the finish, accompanied by moderately strong coffee notes. The finish is mildly dry as I stated, but strangely, given that fact, the chocolate comes back on the exhale. Review by Dan Chacon

Knotted Root – Formless Void – hazy imperial IPA

I was supposed to write this review last week, but instead was dealing with a crashed truck, a flooded apartment, and a broken tooth, all within a three-day period. Needless to say, my mind was not on drinking beer. But now it's a new week, and as The Beatles once said, "Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on." Formless Void is an unfiltered Double IPA that focuses on the Riwaka hop. The nose is a blast of sweet passionfruit and citrus. As with most unfiltered styles of IPA, this beer is dense and cloudy. The palate is bursting with sweet, juicy notes of passionfruit, lemon-lime, and orange with an almost candy-like texture and sweetness. Unlike a lot of Double IPAs, the bitterness is mild. It's soft and smooth, and finishes nice and easy, with the flavors lingering in the best way possible. That lingering finish holds onto the juiciness, with flavors of ripe melon and just a hint of dankness. Fruity, sweet, and well-rounded, this is a fun, highly approachable DIPA for IPA newbies and seasoned IPA lovers alike. Review by Daniel Trouwborst

Shiner – Peach Wheat – flavored wheat ale

A fruited wheat beer is not what I would typically think of for a seasonal offering in February, but maybe it is warmer in Shiner, Texas. On first look, this wheat ale pours a surprisingly clear gold color with a light aromatic head. The nose is full of bright peaches and light earthy wheat notes. On first taste it has a light earthy character with some wheat spice, a light peach flavor compared to the initial aromas, and a clean bright finish. This beer is easily crushable and evocative of warmer times to come. Review by Stefan Walberg
